Have you ever been to a Norwegian fjord? No? Never mind, just visit the northern shores of Lake Garda to get a similar experience. The water surface lies only 65 metres above sea level, but the greatest depth in the lake is 364 metres. The rock faces in this area rise up incredibly steep, which leaves little room for villages. Only Riva can expand a little, as this town is situated on the mouth of the River Sarca.
Further north, at the level of Arco, the river is again flanked by towering rocks which make this place ideal for rock climbing. The neighbouring village of Torbole is wedged in between Monte Brione, the lakefront and the rock on which the ruined Penede Castle is perched. However, this jammed position is just what visitors particularly like about Torbole, since the Garda winds "Ora", "Peler" and “Balì” blow with constant force through this sort of wind tunnel. No wonder that surfers love it!.
A little to the south of Torbole lies the lovely old village of Malcesine which, more often than not, is very overcrowded. Sports buffs like to climb the peak of Monte Baldo which towers almost 2000 metres above the lake. Opposite from Malcesine on the eastern shore is Limone – a village which often seems to get crushed by crowds of daily visitors.
In the early mornings, however, when the waiters of the lakeside cafés roll down the awnings and take the chairs outside, you can still feel some of the charm of these typical, small lakeside towns.
